PM Modi’s Addis Ababa Reception Blends Diaspora Warmth, Bollywood Beats & Ethiopia’s Iconic Coffee Ritual

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Addis Ababa on Tuesday turned into a powerful display of people-driven diplomacy, personal chemistry, and strategic intent, as Ethiopia accorded him a reception that went far beyond protocol.

From the airport to the hotel, the visit opened with symbolism, warmth, and unmistakable political messaging.

In a rare and striking gesture, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali personally received PM Modi at the airport and drove him to his hotel.

The move instantly set the tone for the two-day State visit, underscoring mutual respect and a growing strategic closeness between India and Ethiopia.

Abiy Ahmed went a step further by diverting from the official itinerary to take PM Modi to the Science Museum and Friendship Park, signalling a relationship anchored not just in diplomacy but in shared aspirations for innovation and youth-driven growth.

As PM  Modi arrived at his hotel, members of the Indian diaspora erupted in celebration.

Waving Indian flags and chanting slogans such as ‘Modi Modi’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai,’ they gave the Prime Minister a rousing welcome.

PM Modi responded by interacting warmly with families and children, accepting flowers, and posing for photographs.

Cultural performances added colour to the evening, with artists singing the Hindi song Dharti Sunehra Ambar Neela, highlighting the cultural resonance India enjoys in Ethiopia.

Warm Welcome Strategic Signals

Reacting to the reception, PM Modi described the welcome as ‘vibrant’, noting the popularity of Indian music and culture in Ethiopia.

Earlier, he thanked Abiy Ahmed for the personal warmth shown at the airport and praised Ethiopia’s deep historical roots and civilisational richness.

PM Modi stressed that India and Ethiopia share longstanding ties that now stand ready for a strategic upgrade.

The visit carries significant political and economic weight. PM Modi is scheduled to hold comprehensive talks with Abiy Ahmed covering political cooperation, development partnerships, trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges.

As leading voices of the Global South, both nations are expected to reaffirm their commitment to inclusive growth and multilateral cooperation.

In another symbolic moment, Prime Minister Modi participated in a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony at the airport, calling it a powerful reflection of the country’s heritage. He will also meet members of the Indian diaspora and address a Joint Session of the Ethiopian Parliament, reinforcing India’s outreach beyond governments to people and institutions.

This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ethiopia since 2011.

Addis Ababa, now adorned with welcome hoardings and Indian flags, stands not just as Ethiopia’s capital but as the headquarters of the African Union.

PM Modi has repeatedly highlighted the city’s global importance, especially after India facilitated the African Union’s permanent entry into the G20 during its 2023 presidency.
