PM Modi To Visit MCG, Meet Angus Taylor On Friday: Foreign Secretary Misri

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Australia’s Leader of the Opposition, Angus Taylor, and visit the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday as part of his three-day visit to Australia, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Thursday.

Addressing a special media briefing, Misri said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will accompany PM Modi to the MCG, where the two leaders will unveil the India-Australia sports collaboration roadmap to strengthen cooperation in the sector.

Misri said sports have emerged as a growing area of partnership between the two countries. He noted that India will host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, while Australia will host the Olympic Games in 2032, creating significant opportunities for bilateral cooperation.

PM Modi held talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Governor-General Sam Mostyn and Victoria Governor Margaret Gardner AC on Thursday. He also attended the Australia-India CEO Forum, participated in an Indian community reception in Melbourne and met former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Describing the visit as ‘productive and fruitful’, Misri said it had reinforced several important shared objectives and delivered substantial outcomes.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi and Albanese co-chaired the third Australia-India Annual Summit, where they reviewed progress across trade and investment, critical minerals, clean energy, technology, defence and security, education, skills, mobility, science and innovation, culture, sports and people-to-people ties.

The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments and reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, inclusive and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
