PM Modi Strengthens Ties With Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum At G7 Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Mexico’s newly elected President, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo on the sidelines of the G7 Outreach Summit in Kananaskis, Canada.

This marked the first official interaction between the two leaders, and their discussion focused on strengthening ties between India and Mexico, two key nations of the Global South.

President Sheinbaum described the conversation as one that ‘strengthened our relationship’, with special emphasis on cooperation in science and technology.

In a post on X, she highlighted ‘investments in scientific and technological development’ as the core of the growing India-Mexico partnership.

Shared vision for future cooperation

Prime Minister Modi expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations, noting, “ We both see immense potential in India-Mexico ties growing even stronger in the times to come, especially in sectors like agriculture, semiconductors, critical minerals, healthcare and more. We also talked about ways to enhance people-to-people ties,”

He congratulated President Sheinbaum on her historic electoral win, becoming the first female President of Mexico in over two centuries.

He also underscored India’s commitment to working closely with Mexico in areas of mutual interest.

According to Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, both leaders discussed ways to deepen cooperation in trade, pharmaceuticals, science and technology, and digital innovation.

They also exchanged perspectives on key global and regional issues, including shared priorities for the Global South.

India and Mexico enjoy robust bilateral trade, which reached $8.6 billion in 2023.

Mexico, with its strategic geographic location, serves as a key gateway for Indian trade into Latin America.

Science, technology & healthcare synergy

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration in scientific research and innovation.

A notable milestone in bilateral cooperation was the 2023 agreement signed between India’s Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID).

President Sheinbaum conveyed her appreciation for India’s achievements in digital public infrastructure and expressed a strong interest in working with India in emerging technologies.

PM Modi identified new areas for collaboration, including semiconductors, Artificial Intelligence, Quantum technologies, and critical minerals.

Both leaders emphasised the importance of cultural exchange and people-to-people connections.

They discussed upcoming engagements between think tanks from both countries and acknowledged the growing tourism and educational exchanges between the two nations.

To further cement the relationship, Prime Minister Modi extended a formal invitation to President Sheinbaum to visit India.

The invitation reflects New Delhi’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with Mexico, especially as both nations play increasingly influential roles in global affairs.
