PM Modi Strengthens Global Ties At G20 Summit With A Series Of High-Level Meetings

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a significant meeting with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg on Sunday.

The interaction, shared by the Prime Minister on X, underscored India’s continued engagement with international financial institutions amid evolving global economic challenges.

During the summit’s third session, themed ‘A Fair and a Just Future for All – Critical Minerals; Decent Work; Artificial Intelligence’, PM Modi called for a transformative approach to the promotion of emerging technologies.

He stressed that such technologies must be rooted in human-centric values, progressively global in outlook, and supported by open-source frameworks rather than exclusive models.

Highlighting the profound impact of artificial intelligence on global development, the Prime Minister urged the international community to embrace transparency, safety-by-design and strong oversight.

He reiterated that AI must serve as a force for global good and announced that India will host the AI Impact Summit in February 2026 with the theme ‘Welfare for All, Happiness for All’. He invited all G20 members to participate in shaping the global AI agenda.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties with Jamaica, the Netherlands and South Africa

On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi met Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness and discussed the growing partnership shaped by shared historical and cultural bonds.

In another bilateral engagement, the Prime Minister conferred with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof. The two leaders noted rapid growth in collaboration across energy, technology, innovation and water management. PM Modi emphasised the need to deepen trade and investment ties in the coming years.

Earlier, the Prime Minister held talks with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Their discussions covered commerce, culture, investment and expanded cooperation in technology, skilling, critical minerals and artificial intelligence. PM Modi congratulated President Ramaphosa on South Africa’s successful G20 Presidency.

PM Modi also participated in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting. He underscored the need for stronger coordination among the three democracies in combating terrorism, asserting that there can be no place for double standards.

He proposed institutionalising an IBSA-level National Security Advisor meeting to enhance strategic cooperation.

Through a series of high-level engagements, India reinforced its commitment to global cooperation, innovation-driven development and security partnerships at this year’s G20 Summit.
