PM Modi Receives Festival-Like Welcome From Indian Diaspora In Calgary, Canada

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Calgary, Canada, to a festive and emotional welcome from the Indian diaspora, ahead of his participation in the G7 Summit.

The visit, made at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, drew large crowds outside the hotel where Prime Minister Modi is staying.

Supporters holding placards with slogans such as ‘Welcome Modi Ji’, ‘Namaste Modi Ji’, and ‘Jai Bharat, Jai Canada’ turned out in large numbers, reflecting deep admiration for India’s leader.

For many, the occasion felt more like a festival than a diplomatic event.

“We are eagerly waiting for our beloved leader, PM Modi. We saw his landing and rushed straight here. Since then, we’ve waited just to catch a glimpse of him,” said one enthusiastic member of the Indo-Canadian community.

Another said, “It is a festival for us. Calgary is in celebration mode. We are welcoming world leaders, but most importantly, we are welcoming our Prime Minister with love and open hearts.”

Hopes for stronger India-Canada relations

The visit holds symbolic value, particularly given the recent diplomatic strains between India and Canada during former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s tenure, which was marred by Khalistan-linked tensions.

With Mark Carney now at the helm, many hope the visit will usher in a new phase of cooperation.

“We’re excited to see how Modi Ji will speak for India and make an impact globally, especially in improving India-Canada relations,” said a woman from the crowd.

Others echoed similar sentiments, viewing PM Modi’s presence as a moment of hope and renewed friendship between the two nations.

Shortly after landing, PM Modi posted on his official X handle, “Landed in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit. Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South.”

During his stay, PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders attending the G7 Summit in Kananaskis.

Key discussions are likely to revolve around global challenges, development partnerships, and advancing the interests of the Global South.

As Canada hosts this year’s summit, the enthusiastic welcome Prime Minister Modi received highlights the enduring emotional and cultural ties between the Indian diaspora and their homeland.

It also sets the tone for India’s growing role on the world stage.
