PM Modi, PM Robert Fico Pay Tribute At Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier In Bratislava

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Slovak counterpart, Robert Fico, on Monday paid tribute at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Bratislava, honouring the courage and sacrifice of fallen heroes and remembering their dedication and enduring legacy in Slovakia’s liberation.

The two leaders laid a wreath at the memorial and were also seen interacting as they paid homage at the historic monument in the Slovak capital.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi and PM Fico held bilateral discussions in Bratislava, exploring new avenues of cooperation across trade and investment, defence and security, technology and innovation, space and nuclear energy, education and culture, and talent mobility and people-to-people exchanges.

The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues, including reform of the United Nations.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and other senior officials attended the meeting.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both sides reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral ties and agreed to elevate India-Slovakia relations to a Comprehensive Partnership.

The leaders also noted that the implementation of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) could create significant opportunities in trade, manufacturing, investment and employment generation, particularly for young people.

The meeting resulted in outcomes across several sectors, including digital technology, defence, cybersecurity, post-quantum technologies, audio-visual creation, mobility and scientific cooperation, including nuclear collaboration.

Prime Minister Fico welcomed PM Modi with a ceremonial reception in Bratislava before the talks.

Historic First Visit

The Prime Minister arrived in Slovakia on Sunday for a two-day State Visit. Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar received him and extended a traditional Slovak welcome.

The visit marks the first-ever trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia since the country’s independence in 1993.

PM Modi said the visit would help deepen bilateral ties and explore new areas of cooperation. His visit follows President Droupadi Murmu’s State Visit to Slovakia in April 2025 and Slovak President Peter Pellegrini’s visit to India for the AI Impact Summit in February 2026.
