PM Modi Meets Trinidad & Tobago President Kangaloo At President’s House In Port Of Spain

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President Christine Carla Kangaloo of Trinidad and Tobago on Friday at the President’s House in Port of Spain. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the meeting reaffirmed the strong and longstanding ties between the two nations.

The meeting reflected cordiality and deep appreciation, as Prime Minister Modi thanked the President for warmly hosting him and his delegation.

He expressed particular gratitude for receiving the ‘Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago’, the nation’s highest civilian honour. He called it a tribute to the 1.4 billion people of India.

Prime Minister Modi also congratulated President Kangaloo on receiving the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award earlier this year and praised her dedicated public service.

In return, President Kangaloo acknowledged PM Modi’s leadership and his vision for India.

Both leaders reflected on the deep cultural and historical ties between India and Trinidad & Tobago, particularly the people-to-people connections that have endured over generations.

During the interaction, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s ongoing commitment to support Trinidad and Tobago as well as the wider CARICOM region in advancing Global South cooperation. He also extended an invitation to President Kangaloo to visit India in the future.

Before departing for Argentina, PM Modi shared his appreciation in a post on the social media platform.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Thank you Trinidad & Tobago. The moments here will never be forgotten. We’ve added new momentum to India-Trinidad & Tobago friendship. My gratitude to President Christine Carla Kangaloo, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the Government and people of this wonderful nation.”

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister met with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

The two leaders signed several key agreements in areas including technology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, food processing, agricultural research, disaster response, climate change, and defence.

They also explored ways to enhance cultural cooperation, with an emphasis on Yoga, sports, and cultural exchanges.

PM Modi also addressed the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago. The event drew enthusiastic applause from Members of Parliament more than 20 times.

“It was an honour to address the Parliament of Trinidad & Tobago. I spoke of our shared journey rooted in history, culture and the vibrant spirit of our people. I am confident that this partnership will continue to thrive in the times to come. My sincere thanks to the Members of Parliament who attended today’s address,” PM Modi posted on X.

In another post, he wrote, “I express my heartfelt gratitude to President Christine Carla Kangaloo, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the Government and wonderful people of Trinidad & Tobago for honouring me with ‘The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.’ This honour symbolises the eternal friendship between our two countries. At every step, one can witness the cultural connect between our nations. I’m very honoured that this is the first time this honour has been conferred upon a foreign leader. This recognition will strengthen our resolve to deepen ties with Trinidad & Tobago.”

The MEA later confirmed that both leaders exchanged views on strengthening bilateral ties. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s steadfast support for Trinidad and Tobago and the broader Caribbean community.
