PM Modi Arrives In Buenos Aires; First Indian PM To Visit Argentina In 57 Years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Buenos Aires on Friday evening for a two-day official visit, part of his broader five-nation tour aimed at deepening India’s engagement with the Global South. He was greeted with a ceremonial welcome at Ezeiza International Airport.

This visit marks the first bilateral trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Argentina in 57 years, making it a significant diplomatic milestone.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Landed in Buenos Aires for a bilateral visit which will focus on augmenting relations with Argentina. I’m eager to be meeting President Javier Milei and holding detailed talks with him.”

The Ministry of External Affairs also echoed the sentiment.

“Celebrating the enduring friendship between our nations. PM @narendramodi has landed in the vibrant city of Buenos Aires, Argentina on an Official Visit. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome on arrival at the airport. This is the first bilateral visit by an Indian PM to Argentina in 57 years, marking a new chapter in India-Argentina ties,” the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X.

PM Modi’s tour has already seen successful visits to Ghana and Trinidad & Tobago.

In Argentina, Prime Minister Modi will be hosted by President Milei on 4–5 July.

The two leaders last met in November 2024 on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Brazil. PM Modi had earlier visited Argentina in 2018 for the G20 Summit.

Ahead of his journey, the Prime Minister described Argentina as a key economic partner in Latin America and a close collaborator in the G20.

India and Argentina enjoy wide-ranging ties across various sectors, elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2019.

In 2024, the two countries celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations.

The bilateral relationship also benefits from strong cultural links, with Yoga, Ayurveda, and Indian philosophy enjoying popularity among Argentinians.

As part of the official itinerary, PM Modi will pay tribute at the statue of General José de San Martín, Argentina’s national hero.

He will receive a formal welcome, take part in delegation-level discussions, and attend a lunch hosted by President Milei.

The visit aims to advance cooperation in several key areas, including:

  • Trade,
  • Investment,
  • Defence,
  • Health,
  • Agriculture,
  • Green energy,
  • ICT,
  • Disaster management,
  • Education, and
  • People-to-people connections

PM Modi’s trip comes at a time when Argentina is undergoing significant economic reforms, similar to those undertaken in India in the past.

India’s progress in sectors such as digital infrastructure, defence manufacturing, and space technology holds potential benefits for Argentina.

India’s expertise in digital healthcare and telemedicine may also support Argentina’s efforts to provide accessible, affordable healthcare.

Energy and minerals will likely feature prominently in discussions.

Argentina possesses the second-largest shale gas reserves and the fourth-largest shale oil reserves. This positions the country as a potential long-term energy partner for India.

The country is also part of the Lithium Triangle, alongside Bolivia and Chile, home to vast reserves of critical minerals like lithium and copper, essential for India’s clean energy transition. Indian companies, including Khanij Bidesh India Ltd and Coal India Ltd, have already secured concessions in Argentina’s Catamarca province.

These strategic opportunities will explored in detail during talks between the two leaders.

Following his engagements in Argentina, PM Modi will continue to Brazil for the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro and a bilateral visit to Brasilia, before concluding his tour with a final stop in Namibia.
