PM Modi Meets Laos, Tajikistan Leaders On Sidelines Of SCO Summit In Bishkek

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Laos President Thongloun Sisoulith on Tuesday during his engagements on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek.

The leaders exchanged views on strengthening relations between India and Laos and considered avenues for expanding cooperation in areas of shared interest.

PM Modi later said the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss ways of giving greater momentum to bilateral connections.

The Prime Minister held discussions with Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon during the summit. Their meeting focused on expanding India’s partnership with Tajikistan and identifying new areas for cooperation.

PM Modi stated that India was keen to further develop its engagement with Tajikistan across a broad range of sectors.

Earlier, PM Modi addressed the SCO Council of Heads of State meeting in Bishkek.

During his speech, the Prime Minister reiterated India’s position that conflicts should be settled through diplomatic engagement and dialogue instead of warfare. He noted that instability in one region can have repercussions worldwide, particularly by disrupting energy supplies, maritime trade and international supply chains.

The Prime Minister added that Global South nations often suffer the worst effects of such disruptions.

PM Modi drew attention to the continuing threat posed by terrorism around the world. He further called for concerted international action against terrorist networks and their support systems, including funding, recruitment, radicalisation and safe havens.

The Prime Minister stressed that countries must adopt a united and consistent approach towards terrorism without applying double standards.

The meetings with the Tajikistan and Laos leaders, alongside PM Modi’s participation in the SCO Summit, reflect India’s efforts to deepen diplomatic and economic partnerships across Central Asia and other regions.
