Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Italian counterpart, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, reaffirming the robust and growing friendship between India and Italy.
PM Modi took to social media platform X, stating, “Fully agree with you, PM Giorgia Meloni. India’s friendship with Italy will continue to get stronger, greatly benefitting our people!”
The warm exchange comes amid a series of bilateral meetings PM Modi held with global leaders during the summit, underlining India’s increasing diplomatic engagement on international platforms.
Italy has stood firmly with India on key issues, including a recent expression of support following a terror attack in India.
In April, PM Meloni had condemned the attack and offered full support in countering terrorism—an effort PM Modi deeply appreciated.
In another significant moment, PM Modi met with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
He highlighted India’s ongoing commitment to voicing the concerns of the Global South. “Outstanding conversations with two dear friends, President Ramaphosa of South Africa and President Lula of Brazil. We are unwavering in our commitment to speaking about issues that matter to the Global South. We are equally determined to do whatever it takes to build a better tomorrow for the coming generations!”
Brazilian President Lula echoed this sentiment, posting, “The Global South is present at the G7,” alongside a photograph with PM Modi and President Ramaphosa, symbolising strong unity among emerging economies.
PM Modi also met with several European leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and António Costa, President of the European Council.
Discussions centred on enhancing India-EU strategic ties.
Further meetings included British PM Keir Starmer, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
With each leader, PM Modi explored opportunities for cooperation in trade, technology, sustainability, defence, and critical minerals.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, host of the G7 Summit, described India’s participation as a ‘testament’ to the country’s rising global stature under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.
PM Modi further expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and emphasised the strong bond between India and Canada, grounded in democracy and mutual interests.
The camaraderie between PM Modi and Italian PM Meloni continues to spark interest on social media, with the hashtag #Melodi trending again after their latest meeting.
A brief exchange at the summit, reminiscent of their friendly interaction at COP28 in Dubai, showcased the strength of their rapport.
PM Modi’s presence at the G7 Summit reflects India’s expanding diplomatic footprint, bolstered by strong bilateral ties and a shared commitment to global progress.
