Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, where they reviewed India-Canada relations and explored opportunities to expand cooperation across key sectors.
After the meeting, PM Modi highlighted the growing engagement between the two countries, noting that he had met Prime Minister Carney four times within a year. He said these interactions reflected the shared commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and advancing cooperation in trade, economy, energy, technology and people-to-people exchanges.
The two leaders welcomed the positive momentum in relations and expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved since Carney’s visit to India in March 2026. They reaffirmed their commitment to building a forward-looking strategic partnership and emphasised the complementary strengths of the Indian and Canadian economies.
Both leaders also stressed the importance of resilient supply chains in supporting global energy and food security.
During the discussions, the two leaders reviewed economic cooperation, including developments related to LNG, LPG and metallurgical coal. They welcomed the growing number of high-level exchanges and acknowledged the recent visit of Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to Canada.
The leaders welcomed a Canadian trade mission to India later this year and noted progress in CEPA negotiations. They agreed to strengthen cooperation in defence, finance and migration, while launching talks on a security agreement.
Both sides also backed innovation and talent partnerships, announced Raisina Americas, and agreed to stay engaged on PM Modi’s proposed visit to Canada in 2026.
