PM Modi Likely To Visit Sri Lanka In April On President Dissanayake’s Invitation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Sri Lanka in the first week of April at the invitation of Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, local media reported on Wednesday. The visit, expected on April 5, aims to further deepen ties and enhance the people-centric partnership between the two nations.

Modi may land in Colombo on his way back from Bangkok after attending the 6th BIMSTEC Summit from April 2 to 4. Dissanayake had invited Modi during his visit to India in December, marking his first foreign trip since taking office in September 2024.

During their December meeting, both leaders agreed to elevate India-Sri Lanka relations and transform them into a model for friendly ties. Dissanayake called his visit to India “successful” and highlighted “productive discussions” with Indian leaders and business representatives.

He acknowledged India’s key role in helping Sri Lanka recover from its economic crisis two years ago. India provided critical financial aid, including assistance in debt restructuring. Modi assured full support and reaffirmed India’s commitment to protecting Sri Lanka’s sovereignty.

Modi’s Previous Visits To Sri Lanka

PM Modi has visited Sri Lanka three times since 2014. His last visit in June 2019 was to express solidarity after the Easter Sunday attacks. In March 2015, he made the first standalone bilateral visit by an Indian PM since 1987. In May 2017, he attended Sri Lanka’s first International Vesak Day as the chief guest.

Dissanayake reiterated Sri Lanka’s commitment to regional stability. He assured that Sri Lanka would not allow its territory to be used in ways that could threaten India’s security.
