One of the greatest cricketers of his generation, Steve Smith has announced his retirement from ODI cricket. His decision comes after Australia’s elimination from the ICC Champions Trophy on Tuesday. Smith, who captained the team in the absence of injured Pat Cummins, led Australia to the semi-final before they were knocked out by India.
The Australian batter played 170 ODIs, scoring 5727 runs with 12 centuries. He won two ODI World Cups and leaves as one of the country’s most prolific cricketers. His retirement means he will not feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
In a statement shared by Cricket Australia, Smith expressed gratitude for his ODI career. “It has been a great ride, and I have loved every minute of it. Winning two World Cups was a highlight, along with sharing the journey with fantastic teammates,” he said.
He emphasized the need for fresh talent to prepare for the 2027 World Cup. “Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing, so it feels like the right time to make way,” he added.
After Australia’s semi-final loss to India, Smith acknowledged the inexperience in the squad, especially in the bowling attack. “Some new guys did a really good job. They will be better for this exposure,” he said.
Smith was Australia’s top scorer in the semi-final, making 73 off 96 balls. With his ODI exit and limited T20 involvement, Test cricket remains his primary focus. Australia, already rebuilding after David Warner’s retirement, now faces the challenge of replacing another modern great.
