Prime Minister Narendra Modi, upon his arrival in Marseille, France, highlighted the city’s historical significance in India’s freedom struggle. He paid tribute to Veer Savarkar’s daring escape attempt from British custody in 1910 and expressed gratitude to the French activists who opposed his extradition.
Marseille holds a special place in India’s history as the site where Veer Savarkar, arrested in London for his role in the Nasik Conspiracy Case, attempted a dramatic escape.
While British authorities were transporting him to India by sea, Savarkar leaped into the waters near Marseille and swam to the French coast. However, British authorities swiftly recaptured him on French soil, sparking international protests and bringing India’s independence movement into the global spotlight.
In addition to honoring historical ties, PM Modi’s visit focused on strengthening India-France relations. During the trip, he and French President Emmanuel Macron toured the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, further symbolizing India and France’s growing collaboration in nuclear fusion research.
In a post on X, he shared, “Arrived in Marseille. This city holds a special place in India’s freedom struggle. It was here that the courageous Veer Savarkar made his daring escape attempt. I also extend my gratitude to the people of Marseille and the French activists who fought against his extradition to British custody. Veer Savarkar’s bravery continues to inspire generations!”
Furthermore, the Prime Minister paid tribute to Indian soldiers who fought in the World Wars at the Mazargues War Cemetery, acknowledging their sacrifices.
In Paris, PM Modi addressed the India-France CEO Forum, emphasizing the importance of business partnerships in fostering innovation and economic growth. He underscored the deep trust and shared values between the two nations, highlighting their commitment to solving global challenges together.
PM Modi and President Macron co-chaired the AI Action Summit, which brought together world leaders, policymakers, and industry experts to shape the future of artificial intelligence.
The summit reinforced India and France’s strategic partnership in technological advancement and innovation.
