PM Modi Highlights Semiconductors As Key Pillar Of India-Japan Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday described semiconductors as a ‘strategic domain’ in the growing partnership between India and Japan, noting that India has made notable progress in this field.

The Prime Minister, currently on an official two-day visit to Japan, travelled earlier in the day to Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture on the Shinkansen bullet train with his Japanese counterpart, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

In Sendai, the two leaders toured ‘Tokyo Electron Miyagi Ltd (TEL Miyagi)’, a major player in Japan’s semiconductor industry.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “PM Ishiba and I visited the Tokyo Electron Factory. We went to the Training Room, Production Innovation Lab and interacted with top officials of the company. The semiconductor sector is a key area for India-Japan cooperation.”

“In the last few years, India has made many strides in this sector. A lot of youngsters are getting associated with it as well. We seek to continue this momentum in the times to come,” the post read.

Insights from the Visit

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Prime Minister Modi thanked PM Ishiba for accompanying him and reiterated India’s willingness to work closely with Japan in this strategic sector.

“The Prime Minister learnt about TEL’s role in the global semiconductor value chain, its advanced manufacturing capabilities, and its ongoing and planned collaborations with India. The factory visit gave the leaders a practical understanding of the opportunities that exist between the two countries to forge collaboration in the field of semiconductor supply chain, fabrication, and testing,” the PMO stated.

The visit highlighted complementarities between India’s expanding semiconductor ecosystem and Japan’s technological strengths.

“Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in this sector, building on the Memorandum of Cooperation on the Japan-India Semiconductor Supply Chain Partnership as well as ongoing partnerships under the India-Japan Industrial Competitiveness Partnership and Economic Security Dialogue,” the PMO further noted.

Their joint visit underlined the shared vision of advancing semiconductor collaboration for trusted supply chains.

Separately, in Tokyo, PM Modi met governors of 16 Japanese prefectures and emphasised the transformative potential of regional-level partnerships across trade, innovation, start-ups, and emerging technologies.

The Prime Minister is on a two-day visit to Japan, from 29–30 August, at the invitation of Prime Minister Ishiba. This is his eighth visit to the country, following his last trip in May 2023.
