Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool at the State House, where he personally handed over Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards to the President and First Lady Brinda Gokhool in a symbolic gesture of deep-rooted ties.
During their discussions, both leaders reflected on the historical bond between India and Mauritius, emphasizing their strong bilateral relations and people-to-people connections, according to an official statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
PM Modi, who attended the Mauritius National Day celebrations as Chief Guest for the second time, acknowledged the honor of being part of the event.
Expressing appreciation for the warm reception, he reaffirmed India’s dedication to enhancing cooperation across various sectors.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Had a great meeting with His Excellency Mr. Dharambeer Gokhool, President of Mauritius. He is well acquainted with India and Indian culture. Expressed gratitude for inviting me to be a part of the National Day celebrations of Mauritius. We discussed how to further boost bilateral ties across diverse sectors.”
Following the meeting, President Gokhool hosted a State lunch in honor of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi presented special gifts to the First Lady and President of Mauritius.
Brinda Gokhool received a traditional Banarasi saree in a handcrafted Sadeli box, while officials gifted President Gokhool holy Sangam water from Maha Kumbh in a Brass and Copper pot, along with superfood Makhana.
Marking his participation in the National Day festivities, PM Modi reiterated India’s unwavering support for Mauritius and highlighted the enduring friendship between the two nations.
