PM Modi Calls India, New Zealand Trusted Partners At ‘Kia Ora Modi’ Community Event

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described India and New Zealand as trusted partners connected by friendship, shared democratic values and a common vision for the future while addressing the ‘Kia Ora Modi’ community programme in Auckland on Saturday.

Standing alongside New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, PM Modi said he felt honoured to become the first Indian Prime Minister to undertake an official visit to New Zealand in four decades and conveyed the good wishes of 140 crore Indians.

Drawing inspiration from the Māori tradition of ‘Waka’, PM Modi said the canoe represents a collective journey rather than simply a mode of transport. He explained that the symbol perfectly captures the spirit of India-New Zealand relations, adding that both countries are now setting sail on a fresh journey filled with opportunities for cooperation and growth.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence in the future of the partnership and credited the Indian community with playing a central role in guiding the relationship towards greater success.

PM Modi recognised the contribution of the Indian diaspora living across New Zealand and said the community has become an important pillar of the relationship between the two countries. He also thanked Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, members of the New Zealand government, and leaders from the Labour Party for their continued bipartisan support for stronger India-New Zealand ties.

The enthusiastic crowd frequently greeted the Prime Minister with chants of ‘Modi, Modi’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’, reflecting the excitement surrounding the event.

The programme began with traditional dance and folk music performances that celebrated India’s cultural diversity.

Members of the diaspora waved Indian and New Zealand flags throughout the event and captured the celebrations on their mobile phones, adding to the festive atmosphere.

The community event highlighted the enduring people-to-people relationship between India and New Zealand.
