PM Modi Begins Two-Day Bhutan Visit To Boost Bilateral Ties; To Attend Peace Prayer Festival

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Thimphu on Tuesday for a two-day official visit, receiving a warm welcome from Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay at the airport.

The visit aims to bolster the India-Bhutan partnership and reaffirm India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.

“Landed in Bhutan. Grateful to Prime Minister Tobgay for the warm and gracious welcome at the airport,” PM Modi posted on X. “This visit reflects the deep bonds of friendship and cooperation between our two nations. India and Bhutan share a time-tested partnership built on trust, goodwill, and mutual respect. I look forward to further strengthening our close ties during this visit.”

Echoing the sentiment, Prime Minister Tobgay posted on social media, “I join the entire nation in welcoming my elder brother, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to Bhutan.”

In his departure statement, PM Modi expressed his honour at joining the people of Bhutan. He said he looked forward to celebrating the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth King.

His visit also coincides with the exposition of the Sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha from India.

During the visit, he will offer prayers to the Holy Relics at Tashichhodzong in Thimphu. He will also participate in the Global Peace Prayer Festival, organised by the Royal Government of Bhutan.

Highlighting the cultural and spiritual connection between the two countries, PM Modi said, “The exposition of the Sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha in Bhutan underscores our deep-rooted civilisational and spiritual ties.”

The visit will also mark a key milestone in the India-Bhutan energy partnership.

PM Modi will inaugurate the Punatsangchhu-II hydropower project, highlighting the long-standing cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector.

PM Modi is scheduled to hold meetings with His Majesty the King of Bhutan, the Fourth King, and Prime Minister Tobgay to review the entire spectrum of bilateral cooperation.

“I am confident that this visit will further deepen our bonds of friendship,” PM Modi said.

He added that it will also strengthen our shared pursuit of progress and prosperity, highlighting the strategic and emotional depth of India-Bhutan relations.
