PM Modi Attends 17th BRICS Summit In Brazil; Focuses On Global Governance & AI

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted with a warm welcome by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as he arrived at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders’ Summit.

This occasion marks his fourth visit to Brazil, following a recent historic trip to Argentina.

During the Summit, Prime Minister Modi will participate in discussions on pivotal global issues.

These include reforming global governance structures, promoting peace and security, reinforcing multilateralism, advocating for the responsible use of artificial intelligence, addressing climate change, championing global health initiatives, and tackling economic and financial challenges.

Strategic state visit to Brasilia

Following the two-day Summit, PM Modi will undertake a State Visit to Brasilia—the first by an Indian Prime Minister in almost six decades.

This bilateral engagement aims to strengthen strategic ties with Brazil, working closely with President Lula to advance the interests of the Global South.

Prime Minister Modi plans to hold several bilateral meetings with other world leaders during the Summit.

His earlier statement emphasised India’s foundational role in BRICS and its commitment to fostering a more peaceful, equitable, and multipolar world order.

“As a founding member, India is committed to BRICS… we strive for a more peaceful, equitable, just, democratic and balanced multipolar world order,” he remarked.

Reflecting on the previous BRICS summit in Kazan in October 2024, held under Russian chairmanship, PM Modi observed that the global environment remains unpredictable—marred by conflicts, climate threats, and cyber insecurity.

He noted that such uncertainties have heightened expectations of BRICS as a stabilising force.

India’s upcoming chairship

The Rio Summit bears special significance for India, which will assume the BRICS Chairship next year.

The nation previously held this role in 2021, during the grouping’s 15th anniversary.

This upcoming leadership role reaffirms India’s resolve to strengthen the collective voice of the Global South on the international stage, especially in forums like BRICS.

The theme of the 17th BRICS Summit—Strengthening Global South Cooperation for Inclusive and Sustainable Governance—captures India’s aim to promote inclusive multilateralism.

The first agenda item on Sunday focuses on global governance reform, open exclusively to full members.

Subsequent topics include peace and security, multilateralism, economic and financial cooperation, and the regulation of artificial intelligence.

The day’s proceedings will end with an official reception hosted by President Lula.

On Monday, delegates will shift their focus to the environment, preparations for COP30, and global health challenges—continuing India’s advocacy for sustainable development and equitable health frameworks.
