Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Tokyo on Friday, commencing a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
This marks his eighth visit to Japan as Prime Minister and precedes his scheduled participation in the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit.
Upon arrival, PM Modi expressed optimism about the visit, posting on the social media platform.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Landed in Tokyo. As India and Japan continue to strengthen their developmental cooperation, I look forward to engaging with PM Ishiba and others during this visit, thus providing an opportunity to deepen existing partnerships and explore new avenues of collaboration.”
The Prime Minister was welcomed at the airport by Japan’s Ambassador to India, ONO Keiichi, India’s Ambassador to Japan Sibi George, and other senior dignitaries.
PM Modi was also greeted enthusiastically by members of the Indian diaspora, who gathered in large numbers in Tokyo.
Traditional music, dance performances, and cultural displays highlighted the community’s pride and the enduring people-to-people ties that bind the two nations.
The spirited welcome underscored the growing presence and influence of the Indian community in Japan, setting a positive tone for the high-level diplomatic engagements ahead.
During the visit, PM Modi will hold his first formal bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who succeeded Shigeru Ishiba. The talks will focus on reviewing progress in key sectors, including:
The leaders also plan to address regional and global developments, focusing particularly on issues concerning the Indo-Pacific, sustainable development, and peace-building efforts.
PM Modi will also meet top Japanese industrialists and political leaders, alongside attending the summit. These engagements aim to attract Japanese investment in high-growth sectors such as semiconductors, clean energy, and infrastructure, and to encourage greater collaboration in technology and innovation.
India views Japan as a key economic and strategic partner in Asia, and this visit reaffirms the PM Modi government’s emphasis on fostering strong regional alliances amid shifting global dynamics.
After completing his engagements in Japan, the Prime Minister will depart for China to participate in the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). This marks his first visit to China since 2018, adding further significance to his ongoing diplomatic tour.
With Tokyo as the first leg of this high-stakes trip, PM Modi’s agenda clearly signals a renewed push for regional cooperation, economic diplomacy, and strategic stability across Asia.
