Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
On the occasion of the ceremonial handover of the G20 presidency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the gavel to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who praised India for providing a voice to emerging economies’ concerns.
At the conclusion of the meeting, PM Modi passed over the gavel and wished Brazil a successful president. Brazil will officially assume the chairmanship of the elite grouping on December 1, 2023.
Speaking at the event, Lula da Silva applauded Modi and complimented India for its efforts to give emerging economies a voice on issues of concern.
Lula da Silva also mentioned social inclusion, hunger relief, energy transition, and sustainable development as G20 priorities.
He stated that the UN Security Council requires new emerging countries to join as permanent and non-permanent members in order to restore political power.
“We want greater representation for emerging countries at the World Bank and the IMF”, he added.
