North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Meets With Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu

On Wednesday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, who was on a rare visit to the reclusive country, and both sides agreed to strengthen ties.

Shoigu presented Kim with a letter from Russian President Vladimir Putin. In reply, Kim thanked Putin for sending a military delegation led by Shoigu, noting that the meeting strengthened strategic and traditional DPRK (North Korea)-Russia relations.

This week, a Russian group and a Chinese team led by Chinese Communist Party Politburo member Li Hongzhongas arrived in North Korea to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the conclusion of the Korean War, known in North Korea as ‘Victory Day’.

The groups are the first notable public guests in North Korea since the epidemic began.

During a banquet in Pyongyang, Sergei Shoigu complimented North Korea’s military as the most powerful in the world.

According to the Korean Central Broadcasting Station (KCBS), Sergei Shoigu made the remarks while meeting with his North Korean counterpart Kang Sun Nam.
