Train travel between North Korea and Russia has driven up considerably following a recent summit between Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin, indicating a likely transfer of armaments.
According to the group, high-resolution satellite footage showed at least 70 freight cars at North Korea’s border Tumangang Rail Facility, a figure that is unprecedented even when compared to pre-COVID levels.
The face-to-face meeting between Putin and Kim last month aroused considerable worry among Kyiv’s allies about the likelihood of a weapons deal.
North Korea, which the US has previously accused of sending shells to Russia’s Wagner Group, is a mass manufacturer of conventional weapons and is believed to have substantial supplies of Soviet-era war material — albeit in unknown condition.
Russia has increased shell output this year to a projected 2.5 million, but analysts believe it will fall short of the country’s needs on the battlefield. Moscow’s military fire approximately 60,000 rounds per day.
Although Russia stated that no agreements were signed during Kim’s visit, Putin stated that he saw possibilities for military cooperation.
Russia and North Korea, longtime allies, are subject to a slew of international sanctions, Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, and Pyongyang for nuclear weapons testing.
The White House has stated that any North Korean arms deliveries to Russia would directly violate multiple UN Security Council resolutions, including resolutions that Russia itself voted to adopt.
