Three family members, including the suspected gunman, died in a shooting at a rural house in Caswell County, North Carolina, while a fourth relative was taken to hospital, according to a local report.
Police responded to a call shortly before 8 AM on Wednesday.
Deputies who arrived at the property found several people with gunshot wounds, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said.
Emergency personnel transported one injured person to the hospital, while authorities confirmed multiple deaths at the scene.
Caswell County Sheriff Tony Durden reportedly identified the victims as members of the same family.
Investigators remained at the property to collect evidence and interview people connected with the incident.
Authorities had not immediately disclosed further details about the circumstances or a possible motive.
The incident follows several recent shootings across the United States. On 2 August, a shooting in a Portland, Oregon, neighbourhood killed one person and injured five others.
Portland police responded to reports of gunfire on Northeast Alberta Street at around 03:33 AM.
Officers found two people with apparent gunshot wounds and sent them to hospital. Four other victims later arrived at local hospitals in private vehicles.
One adult man died from his injuries, while doctors treated the remaining five victims, including a teenager, for injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.
On 1 August, another shooting at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, killed three people and injured seven others.
US authorities continue to confront persistent gun violence as the country records hundreds of mass shootings annually.
