‘No Interest In Recapturing Pakistan’: Tharoor Advocates Peace In Diplomatic Mission

Leading an all-party Indian parliamentary delegation to Brazil, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor reaffirmed India’s desire for peace and prosperity in South Asia.

Speaking in Brasília, Tharoor stressed that India has no intentions of annexing or recapturing Pakistan but remains firm in defending its people against terrorism.

“We don’t want to recapture Pakistan or make it a part of India again. We want to be left alone to grow and ensure the well-being of our people,” Tharoor told Brazilian officials during high-level meetings, adding that any response from India is strictly defensive in nature.

The delegation’s visit comes shortly after the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which killed several civilians.

India’s subsequent ‘Operation Sindoor’, targeting terrorist camps across the border, has drawn global attention.

Tharoor and his team used the visit to explain the rationale behind the operation and India’s policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism.

Solidarity From Brazil

Filipe Barros, President of Brazil’s Committee on Foreign Affairs and National Defence, expressed strong support for India.

He acknowledged the shared challenges facing both democracies and proposed deeper cooperation in combating organised crime and terrorism.

When asked about Mahatma Gandhi’s potential stance on Kashmir, Tharoor responded firmly, “Gandhi never advocated surrender to violence. If Pakistan thinks India will back down under threat, they are mistaken. We want peace, but we will respond if provoked.”

The Indian delegation also met with Senator Nelsinho Trad and Ambassador Celso Amorim, engaging in what Tharoor described as ‘insightful and supportive’ conversations.

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, another member of the delegation, noted that Brazil’s longstanding partnership with India is key to advancing shared democratic values.

Vice President Geraldo Alckmin also extended heartfelt condolences for the victims of the Pahalgam attack and welcomed closer Indo-Brazilian cooperation.

Tharoor concluded the visit by emphasising the need for international engagement.

He stated that India does not seek conflict but called on the world to recognise its position.

He urged a global response to terrorism and acknowledged Brazil’s solidarity as a source of strength for India’s stand.

The Brazil leg marked the final stop in the delegation’s wider diplomatic outreach, reinforcing India’s position on national security while building cross-continental consensus for peace.
