Nepal Flash Floods: US To Deploy Disaster Response Adviser, Provide $500,000 Emergency Aid

The United States will deploy a disaster response adviser to Nepal and provide $500,000 in emergency assistance following devastating flash floods in Rasuwa district.

The flooding killed several people and caused widespread destruction.

The US State Department announced the support on Wednesday. It expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones.

The department said it continues to monitor conditions in the affected region.

The adviser will assist relief operations on the ground.

Catholic Relief Services will receive the $500,000 through a State Department global award.

The funding will support emergency shelters, relief supplies, clean water, sanitation and hygiene services.

The US Embassy in Kathmandu is working with local authorities to locate and assist American citizens in affected areas. It has urged Americans to follow local instructions and monitor regional news.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed sorrow over severe flooding in Nepal and China. His spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said the disasters caused deaths, missing persons and extensive damage. Guterres offered condolences and wished injured people a swift recovery.

The United Nations is supporting Nepal’s government as authorities assess the devastation and deliver urgent assistance.

UN teams and humanitarian partners are mobilising personnel and supplies for affected communities.

Dujarric said the Secretary-General commended emergency responders saving lives. He further reaffirmed the UN’s readiness to provide further support.

The joint response focuses on shelter, essential supplies, safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

Authorities are assessing damage and identifying additional needs.

Nepal remains highly vulnerable to floods and landslides during its annual monsoon season.
