Man Charged With Attempted Assassination Of US President After Washington Shooting Incident

A man accused of opening fire near a high-profile political gathering in Washington has been charged with attempting to assassinate the US President, as officials outlined an investigation they say averted a potentially far more serious incident.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche credited law enforcement officers with halting the situation before it escalated. He stated that decisive action ensured the safety of the President and all attendees at the event.

The suspect, named in court filings as Cole Tomas Allen, faces multiple federal charges. These include attempted assassination, transporting a firearm across state lines with intent to commit a crime, and discharging a weapon during a violent offence.

Prosecutors indicated that the counts could result in penalties as severe as life imprisonment.

According to investigators, Allen travelled from California to the US capital by rail and checked into a hotel hosting attendees.

On the evening of 25 April, he reportedly approached a security checkpoint carrying a long firearm. Authorities say he rushed through a screening point shortly before a gunshot was heard.

A member of the US Secret Service took a strike to the chest during the incident but survived, as body armour protected him. The officer returned fire, after which officers subdued the suspect and took him into custody with minor injuries.

US Attorney Jeanine Pirro described the case as a direct attempt on the President’s life, adding that evidence suggests the suspect had outlined intentions to target senior government figures.

Officials reported that Allen possessed more than one weapon, including a shotgun and a handgun.

Investigators are also examining a document that the suspect allegedly sent prior to the attack, detailing motives and potential targets.

Blanche said the incident appeared to involve planning rather than spontaneity. He noted that those involved had secured travel arrangements and accommodation in advance.

Kash Patel said authorities launched a nationwide operation in response. Agents fanned out across several states, and forensic teams rapidly processed evidence.

While praising the coordinated effort that prevented further harm, officials cautioned that inquiries are still ongoing. They added that they have yet to confirm all reported details.

Authorities also used the occasion to warn about the broader risks posed by escalating political tensions. Blanche urges restraint, stressing that violence must not undermine democratic institutions.
