US Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her apprehension on Wednesday about the possibility of Donald Trump returning to the White House in the November election. After Trump’s recent victory in the Iowa caucuses, the initial step in the Republican nomination race, Harris urged fellow Democrats to “fight back” against the prospect of his return.
Speaking on The View, an all-female-hosted talk show on the ABC network, the 59-year-old Harris shared her concerns, stating, “I am scared as heck, which is why I’m traveling our country… we should all be scared.” Despite her worries, Harris emphasized the importance of not running away from challenges but confronting them head-on.
Harris responded to reports of former President Barack Obama’s concerns about the Biden campaign and comments from ex-first lady Michelle Obama, who admitted being “terrified” of a potential second Trump term. President Joe Biden has escalated direct attacks on Trump, highlighting the perceived threat the twice-impeached former president poses to US democracy.
As the president’s reelection campaign focuses on mobilizing key demographics, including Black, female, and young voters, Harris has assumed a more prominent role. Despite being the first female, first Black, and first South Asian vice president, she faces low approval ratings and is a frequent target of Republican criticism regarding her qualifications.
In the coming week, Harris will embark on a nationwide tour advocating for reproductive freedoms, with a particular emphasis on making abortion rights a central issue in the 2024 race. The tour begins in Wisconsin, a pivotal swing state, coinciding with the 51st anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision. Trump’s influence on the court’s conservative appointments and his claims of credit for overturning the landmark ruling last year will likely play a significant role in the discussions.
