US Vice President JD Vance left for Switzerland on Saturday, expressing confidence that the upcoming discussions with Iranian representatives could move negotiations forward on Tehran’s nuclear activities while supporting efforts to maintain stability in Lebanon.
Speaking before he departed from Joint Base Andrews, Vance said Iranian delegates had already reached Switzerland and indicated that negotiations were likely to continue for several days.
“I think we’re going to hopefully make progress on the nuclear issue, make progress on the Lebanon ceasefire issue. Those are the two big things that I think we’re focused on. I’m sure the Iranians are going to have issues they’d like to discuss as well,” Vance said.
Vance travelled with Second Lady Usha Vance aboard a Gulfstream C-37 aircraft, departing at 4:19 PM Eastern Time.
Officials said they selected the aircraft because it was available sooner than the Vice President’s usual plane.
Negotiators will hold the talks near Lucerne, and delays have slowed the start of the diplomatic process.
Vance noted that technical experts and negotiators from various parties have already assembled ahead of the formal meetings.
Vance explained that a key objective of the visit would be to establish a solid framework for future negotiations between the United States and Iran.
Reporters repeatedly questioned Vance about continuing exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah, which have complicated efforts to preserve the ceasefire and advance broader diplomatic initiatives.
While acknowledging the challenges, Vance maintained an optimistic outlook.
“Despite the headlines, things are actually getting better there, and things are slowing down a little bit,” he said.
The US Vice President praised Secretary of State Marco Rubio for helping manage the situation. He also commended other members of the diplomatic team for their efforts.
Vance stressed the importance of ensuring long-term security for both Israel and Lebanon.
The negotiations in Switzerland will examine both technical and political aspects of US-Iran relations. Discussions will also focus on preserving the Lebanon ceasefire. Efforts to maintain the ceasefire will remain a central priority throughout the talks.
