Japan PM Takaichi Pushes For Iran Talks As Regional Tensions Persist

The Japanese government is preparing for potential summit-level talks with Iran, as Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi emphasised the need for dialogue amid ongoing tensions in West Asia.

Addressing a parliamentary committee, Takaichi said Japan is working towards leadership-level discussions at an appropriate time, underscoring a cautious but proactive diplomatic approach. She said Japan would base any engagement decision on its national interest and broader geopolitical considerations.

Earlier, the Prime Minister also indicated that Tokyo remains open to dialogue with Iranian leaders when conditions are suitable.

Japan relies heavily on West Asia for a large share of its crude oil, tying its interest in the region directly to energy needs.

In a related development, Takaichi recently met US President Donald Trump at the White House, where discussions focused on regional tensions, energy security and global economic concerns.

The Japanese PM expressed confidence in diplomatic efforts to restore peace, while highlighting the risks posed by ongoing conflicts. Trump, in turn, praised Takaichi’s leadership and reaffirmed strong bilateral ties between the United States and Japan.
