Israeli Envoy Hails PM Modi’s Backing For Gaza Peace Initiative

Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar has voiced appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for endorsing the US-led peace proposal aimed at resolving the Gaza conflict.

Speaking in New Delhi on Tuesday, Azar described the plan as a ‘historic vision’ and emphasised that broad international support was already forming around it.

The envoy’s remarks came a day after US President Donald Trump presented his 20-point roadmap in Washington alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had welcomed the announcement in a social media post, calling the initiative ‘a viable pathway to long-term and sustainable peace, security and development’ not only for Israel and Palestine but for the wider West Asian region. Israel has noted its endorsement as a significant diplomatic gesture.

Conditions for Palestinian Self-Governance

Azar outlined the structural requirements for Palestinian self-rule under the proposed framework. These conditions include establishing a constitution, ensuring free elections, protecting human rights and religious freedom, and maintaining an independent judiciary.

He emphasised the importance of transparent financial systems, effective anti-corruption mechanisms, and educational reforms to eliminate incitement from school curricula.

“Civilian control, law enforcement, and full demilitarisation will be essential,” he remarked.

According to the envoy, Arab and Muslim nations have already welcomed Trump’s proposal, with Egypt and Qatar playing a constructive role. He suggested that there was now ‘a larger Arab consensus on Hamas’ and hinted that the group may come under pressure to reconsider its position.

Azar also confirmed that Israel will withdraw to the yellow line once it releases the hostages and guarantees the security perimeters. Officials have set a 72-hour timeframe for the release process.

While acknowledging challenges, Azar underlined the possibility of Gaza’s de-radicalisation and economic revival.

“We can share Israel’s economic success with Palestine if this peace vision moves forward,” he said.

The ambassador concluded by urging more countries to rally behind the initiative, reaffirming that India’s early support had strengthened its global momentum.
