The Israeli military announced it has detained a Syrian national, Ali Soleiman al-Assi, on charges of gathering intelligence on Israel’s army in the border region on behalf of an alleged Iranian terror network. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released a statement on Sunday identifying al-Assi as an operative working under Iranian direction, asserting that his actions were part of a network planning future attacks.
The IDF recently disclosed that it captured the individual ‘in recent months’. Video footage from the IDF shows a nighttime raid conducted by the elite Egoz commando unit, accompanied by field interrogators.
The video shows soldiers entering a one-story building and arresting a man later identified as al-Assi, with his hands cuffed behind his back.

Further video segments reveal al-Assi during interrogation, describing his recruitment by a contact he later recognized as linked to Iranian intelligence. His primary instructions were to “observe the border” and report on IDF activities, including tank and patrol movements.
The operation reflects the IDF’s ongoing efforts to counter alleged Iranian influence and intelligence-gathering near the Israeli-Syrian border, which remains a highly sensitive area given the broader regional tensions.
