The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the tragic dual explosions in Iran that resulted in the loss of at least 103 lives. These devastating bombs went off during a ceremony in Kerman, Iran, held to honour the memory of Commander Qassem Soleimani, who fell to a US drone strike in 2020.
According to the reports, the Islamic State conveyed its claim of responsibility for the attack through its affiliated channels on Telegram. The explosions took place near the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque in Kerman, the hometown where Soleimani was laid to rest. Unbeknownst, supporters gathered to commemorate the fourth anniversary of his passing, which was disrupted by this horrendous violence. State media disclosed that approximately 170 individuals suffered injuries in these blasts.
Adding to the distress, state media reported a shooting incident that occurred in Kerman the day after the explosions at the solemn event.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency detailed that “two bags carrying bombs went off” at the location, noting that the explosives were triggered remotely.
Soleimani, who led the Quds Force—a crucial branch of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps responsible for foreign operations—held a prominent role in directing military strategies across the Middle East. Revered as a “living martyr” by Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Soleimani garnered widespread admiration for his contributions to countering the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. His legacy as a hero was firmly established long before his tragic demise.
