Iran’s Abbas Araghchi Praises Russia Support As US Tensions Rise

Abbas Araghchi on Tuesday affirmed that Iran values Russia’s solidarity and diplomatic backing amid escalating tensions with the United States. His remarks followed high-level engagements in Saint Petersburg with Vladimir Putin and Sergey Lavrov.

Araghchi stated on X that the evolving regional situation reflects the depth of Tehran-Moscow strategic ties. He expressed appreciation for Russia’s consistent support for diplomacy and emphasised that bilateral relations continue to strengthen despite ongoing challenges.

Putin reiterated Moscow’s commitment to fostering peace in West Asia. He assured that Russia would act in favour of regional stability and safeguard shared interests.

Putin praised Iran’s resilience, noting that its people have demonstrated courage in defending sovereignty. He also conveyed confidence that stability would eventually prevail.

During discussions, Araghchi conveyed greetings from Iran’s leadership, including Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. He asserted that Iran has resisted what he described as US aggression and reaffirmed that the partnership with Russia remains firm and will progress irrespective of circumstances.

According to Iranian officials, the visit forms part of ongoing consultations between both nations, which share aligned views on several regional and global matters.

Diplomatic engagement between the two presidents has remained active, with multiple telephonic interactions since the conflict began on February 28.

Araghchi travelled to Russia after concluding a visit to Oman.

Earlier diplomatic efforts included a two-week ceasefire beginning April 8 and negotiations held on April 11-12. Talks collapsed after extended discussions lasting 21 hours.

The developments underscore continued diplomatic manoeuvres as geopolitical tensions persist across the region.
