PM Narendra Modi Unveils Rs 4,000 Crore Development Push In Sikkim

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled out a series of development initiatives in Sikkim, with projects worth around Rs 4,000 crore aimed at boosting infrastructure, healthcare, and education in the state.

Speaking at a public event in Paljor Stadium, the Prime Minister described the Northeast as India’s ‘Ashtalakshmi’, underlining its importance in the country’s overall development. He said the government has accelerated efforts in the region by moving beyond the earlier ‘Act East’ framework towards a faster execution-driven approach.

According to PM Modi, the newly launched projects are part of a broader push to strengthen essential sectors and improve the quality of life in Sikkim.

Highlighting the state’s natural appeal, the Prime Minister noted its rich biodiversity, including hundreds of bird and butterfly species, along with extensive forest cover. He said such features make Sikkim a major attraction for visitors and emphasised the need to improve access to fully unlock its tourism potential.

The Prime Minister pointed to ongoing and planned connectivity projects as key enablers. He said the Sevok–Rangpo railway line is progressing quickly and will bring rail access to the state for the first time.

PM Modi also mentioned a proposed expressway connecting Bagdogra Airport to Gangtok, which will likely cut travel time and support tourism.

Criticism of Previous Governments

Prime Minister Modi criticised previous administrations led by the Congress, alleging that the Northeast, including Sikkim, did not receive adequate attention in the past. He added that development efforts have gathered pace in recent years.

To support local livelihoods, the Prime Minister announced plans to develop 1,000 homestays across the state, aimed at generating employment through tourism. He also praised the region’s youth for their achievements in sports and highlighted initiatives such as Khelo India to nurture talent.

In the healthcare sector, several new schemes were introduced, with PM Modi stating that the current government has prioritised strengthening medical infrastructure in the region.

The projects unveiled during the visit will likely improve connectivity, expand public services, and deepen Sikkim’s integration with the rest of the country.
