Iran Rejects Second Round Of US Talks; Cites ‘Unreasonable Demands’

Iran has ruled out participation in a proposed second round of negotiations with the United States, dismissing reports that fresh talks were due to take place in Pakistan.

State news agency IRNA said Iran cited Washington’s ‘unreasonable demands’ and shifting positions in making its decision. It also pointed to the continued naval blockade, which it considers a violation of the existing ceasefire.

In statements shared on its social media account, IRNA rejected claims that a follow-up meeting between the two sides had been arranged in Islamabad, calling such reports inaccurate. It also accused the United States of attempting to influence public perception through selective media narratives.

According to the agency, repeated changes in the US stance and what it termed contradictory messaging have stalled progress in diplomatic efforts. Under current conditions, IRNA said there is little chance of meaningful outcomes from further discussions.

Tensions between the two countries escalated sharply after joint military strikes by Israel and the United States on Iranian targets in late February. The attacks resulted in the death of Ali Khamenei, alongside senior military officials and civilians.

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks directed at Israeli territory and US-linked sites across the Middle East, while also tightening its control over the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.

The sides eventually agreed a ceasefire on 8 April. They then held negotiations in Islamabad on 11 and 12 April. Those talks, however, ended without agreement, and the United States subsequently enforced its own restrictions on maritime movement in the region.

Although another round of discussions seemed likely, Iran’s latest stance signals a further setback to efforts to stabilise relations between the two sides.
