Iran has reportedly put forward a fresh proposal to the United States aimed at easing tensions by reopening the Strait of Hormuz and bringing ongoing hostilities to a close, while deferring contentious nuclear discussions to a later phase.
According to a report by Axios, the suggested approach is designed to move past the current diplomatic deadlock and sidestep divisions within Iran over how far it should go on nuclear commitments.
The proposal, however, could complicate Washington’s strategy. Ending the blockade and conflict at this stage may weaken leverage held by President Donald Trump in future negotiations, particularly on issues such as reducing Iran’s enriched uranium reserves and limiting its nuclear programme.
The report also indicated that Trump will likely convene senior officials for a high-level discussion in the White House Situation Room to assess the impasse and consider possible next steps.
In a separate interview with Fox News, the US President suggested he favours maintaining pressure through restrictions on Iran’s oil exports. He indicated that limiting the country’s ability to ship oil could intensify internal strain and potentially force concessions from Tehran.
The developments follow unsuccessful talks in Islamabad, which failed to produce any breakthrough, further straining relations between the two countries.
Officials on both sides have yet to publicly confirm any shift in their positions, but the latest proposal highlights ongoing efforts to find a way out of the escalating crisis.
