Iran Open To Diplomacy But Distrusts US, Says President Pezeshkian

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Tehran remains willing to explore diplomatic solutions to end the conflict involving the United States and Israel, while stressing that Iran would continue to defend its national rights and interests.

During a phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday, Pezeshkian voiced strong mistrust towards Washington, accusing the US of acting aggressively even during ongoing negotiations.

According to a statement released by the Iranian president’s office, Pezeshkian referred to recent American actions, including two attacks carried out during bilateral discussions, and described them as ‘stabbing Iran in the back’.

The conversation took place as reports surfaced claiming that Tehran and Washington could be nearing a limited agreement aimed at ending the conflict between the two countries.

According to those reports, the proposed understanding could involve Iran temporarily halting nuclear enrichment activities in exchange for sanctions relief from the United States.

Reports said the discussions also included easing restrictions on transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran, the United States and Israel agreed to a ceasefire on April 8 following 40 days of fighting that began after US and Israeli strikes on February 28.

After the ceasefire, Iranian and American delegations met in Islamabad on April 11 and 12 for peace negotiations. The talks, however, ended without reaching any agreement.

In recent weeks, both sides have continued exchanging proposals aimed at ending the conflict, with Iran currently reviewing the latest American plan.

Tehran Rejects Media Reports

At the same time, Tehran denied reports suggesting that a final one-page agreement was close to completion.

Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency dismissed the reports as ‘fabricated’ and accused certain media outlets of attempting to influence global markets and lower oil prices.

The agency, quoting unnamed sources, stated that Iran has not yet issued a response to the latest US message, which was reportedly sent through Pakistan.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said officials were still assessing the proposal from Washington. He added that Tehran would respond after completing the review.
