Iran Calls On UN To Recognise US & Israel As Initiators Of ‘Aggression’

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to formally recognise Israel and the United States as the initiators of ‘aggression’ against Iran, accusing both nations of violations of international law.

In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UNSC President Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Araghchi urged the Council to fulfil its responsibility in maintaining international peace and security.

The letter, delivered on Sunday, was a formal plea for the UNSC to hold accountable those responsible for the violence and ensure such incidents do not occur again.

Accusations against Israel & the US

Araghchi accused Israel of deliberately targeting civilian structures, residential buildings, and infrastructure. He described these actions as a ‘flagrant breach’ of the UN Charter and a ‘blatant violation’ of international law.

Moreover, Iran’s Foreign Minister claimed that Israel, along with the United States, had specifically targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities, which are under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

He stressed that these actions constitute a grave violation of both the UN Charter and the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

According to Araghchi, the strikes on nuclear facilities undermined the IAEA’s resolutions and its regulatory role, pushing for immediate UNSC action to prevent further such incidents.

Timeline of events

The tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States escalated significantly in June.

On June 13, Israel launched a series of airstrikes on Iranian soil, targeting nuclear and military sites, as well as killing senior commanders and scientists, alongside numerous civilians.

In retaliation, Iran launched multiple waves of missile and drone strikes against Israel. These exchanges of fire resulted in heavy casualties on both sides.

In a further escalation, on June 22, US forces bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities, prompting a swift response from Iran, which struck the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

After 12 days of intense fighting, a ceasefire was brokered between Iran and Israel on Tuesday.

UNSC’s role & Iran’s call for accountability

Araghchi’s letter to the UNSC also called for the Council to take a strong stand and demand that the US and Israel face the consequences of their actions.

He stressed that such ‘aggressions’ should not go unchecked, and he urged the UNSC to prevent any future violations of international law that could further destabilise the region.

This call comes as Iran seeks stronger international backing for its position in the conflict, particularly in light of what it describes as unwarranted and unlawful actions by Israel and the US, which it claims have led to widespread suffering and a violation of global peace frameworks.

The UNSC’s response to Iran’s request could set a significant precedent for how the international community addresses military actions that cross boundaries of international law and the sovereignty of nations.

Whether or not the UNSC takes action will likely affect future diplomatic and military engagements in the region.
