India’s Development Partnership With Maldives Benefits Both Nations: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu in Tianjin on Sunday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, highlighting that India’s development partnership with the island nation benefits people in both countries.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Interacted with President Muizzu of Maldives on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Tianjin. India’s developmental cooperation with Maldives is greatly beneficial for our people.”

Other Key Bilateral Meetings

Prime Minister Modi held a meeting with Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

The Prime Minister described ties between the two neighbours as ‘deep-rooted and very special’, noting in a social media post that he was ‘delighted’ to meet Oli in Tianjin.

The two had last interacted in April during the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok.

Earlier, PM Modi met Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission.

The leaders reviewed the state of India–Myanmar relations and discussed cooperation in several areas, including trade, development, defence, security, and border management.

The Prime Minister also held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin.

The two leaders stressed the need to maintain peace along the border and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing cooperation based on mutual respect, shared interests and sensitivity.

Following the meeting, PM Modi posted, “Had a fruitful meeting with President Xi Jinping in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. We reviewed the positive momentum in India-China relations since our last meeting in Kazan. We agreed on the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility in border areas and reaffirmed our commitment to cooperation based on mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity.”

In addition, PM Modi met Politburo Standing Committee member Cai Qi, with the focus on strengthening political, economic and cultural exchanges between India and China.

PM Modi arrived in Tianjin on Saturday from Tokyo, where he had concluded an official visit. He received a ceremonial welcome at Binhai International Airport ahead of the two-day SCO gathering.
