Indian Diaspora Gives PM Modi A Rousing Welcome In Melbourne

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday received a rousing welcome from members of the Indian community in Melbourne after arriving from Indonesia for the second leg of his three-nation tour.

Despite the chilly weather, a large number of people gathered outside his hotel late Wednesday evening (local time) to greet him.

PM Modi interacted with members of the diaspora amid chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Modi, Modi’.

Cultural performances by local artists were organised to mark his arrival, and the Prime Minister later thanked the Indian community for the warm reception, describing it as truly unforgettable.

During the welcome programme, PM Modi praised the Australian-India Orchestra’s rendition of Maa Tujhe Salaam, saying it reflected the power of music in strengthening people-to-people ties. He also noted that the performance highlighted the global popularity of Vande Mataram as India marks its 150th anniversary.

The Prime Minister also witnessed a musical performance featuring Australia’s traditional Didgeridoo and India’s Tabla, describing it as an example of the deep cultural connection between the two countries. He further appreciated a Kathak performance and expressed happiness over the growing popularity of Indian classical dance in Australia.

Earlier, after arriving in Melbourne, PM Modi said his visit would add vigour to the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He will likely hold talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, co-chair the 3rd Annual Summit, meet Governor-General Sam Mostyn, participate in the India-Australia CEOs Forum, and address the Indian diaspora.

Ahead of the visit, Prime Minister Albanese described India as a key economic partner and said the bilateral relationship has never been more consequential, highlighting cooperation in trade, defence, security and technology.
