Indian Americans Raise Immigration Concerns In Meeting With Congressman Jim McGovern

Indian American community leaders raised concerns over immigration challenges affecting students, families and healthcare professionals during a meeting with Congressman Jim McGovern in Massachusetts.

The September 19 meeting took place at the India Worcester Centre in Shrewsbury. Professionals, entrepreneurs, physicians and civic advocates attended the discussion.

Participants discussed immigration, healthcare, economic opportunity, civic participation and India-US relations. They stressed the importance of direct dialogue with elected representatives from both major parties.

The community did not outline specific immigration proposals. It highlighted difficulties faced by students, families, medical professionals and other immigrants navigating the US system.

Participants said Indian Americans from different religions, generations and political viewpoints should have a meaningful voice in civic affairs.

McGovern, a Democrat, represents Massachusetts’ second congressional district in the US House of Representatives.

The meeting examined Indian Americans’ role in building bipartisan support for the India-US Civil Nuclear Agreement.

Ramesh Vishwanath Kapur, founder and president of the US India Security Council, highlighted cross-party cooperation.

“The Civil Nuclear Agreement showed what is possible when Republicans and Democrats come together around a shared strategic vision,” Kapur said.

Satya Mitra, a community leader and Worcester city councillor-at-large, praised McGovern’s accessibility and public service.

“What has always stood out to me is his accessibility and commitment to public service,” Mitra said.

Sahdev Passey praised McGovern’s constituent outreach, according to the statement.

Participants sought sustained engagement with elected officials at federal, state and local levels. They identified technology, trade, energy, healthcare, education, defence and innovation as areas for stronger bilateral cooperation. They urged collaboration among community organisations, businesses, civic advocates, students and younger generations, with the goal of building a durable structure for bipartisan policy engagement.
