Imran Khan Secures Pakistan Elections from Detention; Sister Alleges Military Threats

Pakistan Election 2024: Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged victorious in the general elections, despite facing obstacles such as many of their candidates being compelled to run as independents due to restrictions on using the party symbol – a cricket bat – which hindered recognition for illiterate voters. As the election oversight body announced results for most of the 266 National Assembly constituencies, PTI secured 99 seats, while Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League party won 71 seats. However, with a third major party in contention, no clear majority was established. Tragically, one constituency’s election was postponed due to the candidate’s assassination.

Aleema Khan voiced concerns over alleged irregularities, claiming PTI-backed candidates lost despite commanding leads, and hinted at legal recourse. Notably, Imran Khan, barred from contesting due to criminal convictions, supported independent candidates who surprisingly performed well in the vote count, challenging assertions of election manipulation favoring Nawaz Sharif.

The unexpected outcome compelled Sharif, backed by the security establishment, to pivot towards forming a coalition government, acknowledging the PTI’s significant gains. Aleema Khan expressed apprehension over her brother’s safety, alleging threats from the military.
