Donald Trump delivered the longest convention speech ever, nearly 93 minutes, concluding a major four-day Republican event in Wisconsin. Thousands of conservative activists and officials attended as voters weigh their options between two unpopular candidates. Following a recent attempt on his life, Trump seized the opportunity to appeal to more voters with a fresh approach.
Addressing the nation, “The discord and division in our society must be healed. We must heal it quickly. As Americans, we are bound together by a single fate and a shared destiny. We rise together. Or we fall apart,” Trump said, wearing a large white bandage on his right ear, as he has all week, to cover a wound he sustained in the Saturday shooting. “I am running to be president for all of America, not half of America, because there is no victory in winning for half of America.”
While maintaining a calmer tone than usual, Trump outlined plans for what he claimed would be the largest deportation operation in U.S. history and criticized illegal border crossings as an “invasion.” He also suggested upcoming tariffs on trade and advocated for a foreign policy focused on America’s interests.
Trump alleged that Democrats cheated in the 2020 election, despite investigations proving otherwise. He emphasized the importance of respecting dissent and avoiding demonizing political differences, despite his history of calling for legal action against his opponents.
In response, Biden’s campaign chair criticized Trump for harming the economy, diminishing rights, and neglecting middle-class families. She cautioned that Trump’s leadership could push the country toward further extremes.
