Police said a hostage situation arose at Hamburg airport on Saturday night, causing traffic to be halted and the terminals to be evacuated.
A gunman rammed his car through the security area onto the tarmac around 8 p.m., firing two rounds into the air and throwing two burning bottles out of the vehicle.
According to the authorities, at least two people were in the car, including a toddler.
“The wife of the driver had placed an emergency call alerting police to the abduction of her child”, the authorities continued.
Hamburg police tweeted, “We are on-site with a large contingent of emergency services. We are currently assuming a static hostage situation”, through its official ‘X’ handle.
The automobile stayed parked in the airport’s apron area.
Later Saturday, police stated that they believed a custody dispute was a background to this operation.
Psychologists and negotiation officers are on the scene, according to police, who also stated that they were in communication with the individual in the vehicle.
