Hamas named Yahya Sinwar as its new political bureau chief. Sinwar replaces Ismail Haniyeh, who was recently assassinated in Tehran. Haniyeh’s death occurred a week after he attended the inauguration of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian. Iran has accused Israel of carrying out the assassination and has promised severe retaliation.
Yahya Ibrahim Hassan Sinwar, 61, has led Hamas in Gaza since early 2017. He succeeded Haniyeh in this role. Sinwar is linked to the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. This attack led to a severe Israeli military response. The conflict caused massive destruction in Gaza and resulted in nearly 40,000 deaths.

In 1989, Sinwar was arrested by Israel. He was convicted of kidnapping and murdering two Israeli soldiers. Additionally, he was accused of killing four alleged Palestinian collaborators. Sinwar received four life sentences for these crimes. He served 22 years in prison before being released. In 2011, he was part of a prisoner exchange. This exchange was for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who had been abducted.
The appointment of Sinwar as Hamas’s new leader marks a significant shift in the group’s leadership. The ongoing conflict and recent developments will likely influence his tenure.
