UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has praised India and other nations for their contributions to the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, expressing ‘deep appreciation’ for their efforts despite escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah in the region.
During an emergency meeting of the Security Council on the Middle East on Wednesday, Guterres underscored the critical role of UN peacekeepers deployed with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
He stated, “UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers remain in position, and the UN flag continues to fly despite Israel’s request to relocate.”
The nearly 900 Indian troops serving with UNIFIL find themselves on the frontline between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters.
The militia, supported by Iran, has a strong presence in southern Lebanon and frequently clashes with Israel.
As tensions rise, these peacekeepers find themselves caught in the crossfire but continue to maintain stability along the volatile Blue Line separating Israel from Lebanon.
Acknowledging the perilous situation, Guterres commended both the military and civilian members of UNIFIL and the nations that contribute troops to the mission.
He further asserted, “We deeply value the courage and commitment of our peacekeepers.”
According to UNIFIL officials on the ground, the intensity of the conflict has increased, with heightened exchanges of fire and more frequent shelling.
UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric shared that peacekeepers are constantly adjusting their operations to protect themselves while continuing to fulfill their mandate.
In light of the dangers, the Israeli military had requested that UNIFIL withdraw from several positions near the Blue Line.
However, Dujarric confirmed that a decision was made to maintain their positions, both operationally and politically.
“Our peacekeepers will stay, but we are reassessing the situation on an ongoing basis to ensure their safety,” he added.
UNIFIL remains a key player in facilitating communication between the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Israeli Defense Forces, working to prevent further escalation and provide critical updates on the situation.
Despite the challenges, the mission continues to serve as a vital stabilizing force in the conflict-ridden region.
