On Friday, United Nations justices will rule on South Africa’s request for emergency measures against Israel, which is accused of state-led genocide at the World Court for its military operation in Gaza.
South Africa called an immediate halt to Israel’s military operation, which has destroyed much of the enclave and killed over 25,000 people.
Israel has asked the court to dismiss the case completely. On Thursday, an Israeli government representative stated that they expect the United Nation’s top court to throw out these spurious and specious charges.
South Africa claimed two weeks ago that Israel’s aerial and ground offensive is intended to result in “the destruction of the population” of Gaza.
Israel denies the claims, claiming that it follows international law and has the right to defend itself.
Israel launched its war in Gaza following Hamas terrorists’ cross-border raid on October 7. As per the Israeli reports, 1,200 persons were killed, the majority of whom were civilians, and 240 were held captive.
The 17-judge panel will only assess whether or not to apply provisional measures and whether there is a reasonable possibility that Israel’s action violates the 1948 Genocide Convention.
The court will rule at 1 p.m. (1200 GMT) following a hearing that is likely to take approximately an hour.
South Africa has asked it to grant nine emergency measures, which operate as a restraining order while the court hears the matter in its entirety, which could take years.
Pretoria wants the court to declare a stop to Israeli military action in Gaza, allowing more humanitarian aid while Israel investigates and prosecutes potential crimes.
The court is not required to follow South Africa’s requests and may impose its measures if it determines it has jurisdiction at this point of the proceedings.
