During his three-day visit to South Africa for the 15th BRICS summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased India’s rich heritage and cultural diplomacy by presenting special gifts to several prominent leaders.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa received an intricate Bidri work Pair of Surahi, an Indian craft that dates back 500 years and is exclusive to Bidar. The Surahi, adorned with detailed patterns and inlaid with pure Silver wire, exemplifies the intricate craftsmanship that goes into its creation, symbolizing the amalgamation of artistry and heritage.
To the first lady of South Africa, Tshepo Motsepe, Prime Minister Modi gifted a Naga shawl—a masterpiece of textile art woven by Nagaland’s tribal communities for centuries. The shawl’s geometric and symbolic designs, woven from locally sourced materials like cotton, silk, and wool, reflect the tribe’s myths, legends, and beliefs, preserving their cultural heritage.
In a gesture of cultural exchange, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received a Gond painting from Madhya Pradesh. Gond paintings, a revered tribal art form, are created with meticulous dots and lines, depicting the essence of nature and life. Rooted in the Gond culture, these artworks utilize natural colors and materials to tell stories of tradition and harmony.
Addressing the BRICS summit, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of adapting to changing times and the expansion of BRICS as a symbol of global unity.
