A video showing French President Emmanuel Macron and first lady Brigitte Macron has gone viral on social media, prompting speculation about tensions in their relationship.
The footage, taken during their arrival in Vietnam for a Southeast Asia tour, shows what appears to be a brief quarrel between the couple.
As the door of the presidential plane opened, Brigitte Macron’s hand was seen on Emmanuel Macron’s face.
The French president looked visibly uncomfortable but quickly regained composure and waved to the waiting crowd.
President Macron then stepped off the plane and offered his arm to his wife. Brigitte appeared to decline the gesture.
The short clip sparked widespread commentary, revisiting past controversies and raising questions about the couple’s current dynamic.
Some social media users, including pro-Russian accounts, claimed the footage revealed deeper issues in the president’s personal life.
The online reaction has been intense, with many users interpreting the moment as a public sign of strain.
The French President’s office dismissed the speculation. A close associate of Macron told reporters it was a harmless squabble.
“It was a moment when the president and his wife were decompressing one last time before the trip by joking around,” the aide said.
The official added, “It’s a moment of togetherness. No more was needed to feed the mills of conspiracy theorists.”
The presidency blamed misleading narratives and foreign propaganda for fuelling the online backlash.
